But there is another curious character involved, who doesn't really
exist- and for someone who isn't, he sure did have a a key role. Tintin.

But
also there are many parallels and connections and references all
through my life which all can be traced back to Tintin. My name:
Siege is really just a phonetic word of my initials, shortened.
CJ, just the first syllable = "siege" and at some point
in 1982 or so I realized that I could spell it like the word siege.
So I started signing my cartoons. The
creator of Tintin George Remi use the same device- I hadn't realized
that for years, but in Belgium and France you say your initials
backwards from what Americans are used to. His initials, said
in that tradition are not GR, they are RG. And when you say RG
in French you get Herge. Years later I was sort of struck by the
strange parallel. And I didn't make it up: siege was Jonathan's
nickname for me. And so it's funny after Johnson I spent untold
hours poring over the books that were it would have worked out
that way.
The
cover of the band's first record was a cartoon which I had drawn.
We call it the man and the dog and there really isn't any
name other than that. Tintin and snowy are a boy and a dog. I
hadn't noted the parallel until years later.

Jonathan & Duncan in 1988
There's more but
Tintin
was like a yardstick for us, certainly for me. Because everything the
Tintin did all the adventures he was involved in an tight spots
that he managed to get out of set the bar very high for kicking ass
and I felt I was up to the job. Tintin could chase the bad guys in a
borrowed Jaguars when he didn;t have a key, and inched along high ledges,
and snuck into the grounds of evil rich men ducking behind the bushes
with a 45 automatic: precisely the sort of person that I imagine myself
to be.
I should interview Duncan and Jonathan for the sake of this article,
and see what struck them about Tintin and the books.
